Professor Andrew Futter

Professor Andrew Futter is Professor of International Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Leicester, where he has been a faculty member since 2012. He is one of the United Kingdom’s foremost scholars of nuclear politics and emerging military technologies, with a research agenda spanning nuclear strategy and deterrence, arms control, cyber threats to nuclear weapons, and the transformative implications of disruptive technologies for the global nuclear order.

Professor Futter is the Principal Investigator of the European Research Council-funded project Towards a Third Nuclear Age, a five-year programme examining the technological, geopolitical, and normative shifts reshaping the current global nuclear architecture. He previously held an ESRC Future Research Leaders grant on cyber threats and nuclear weapons, and visiting fellowships at the Centre for Arms Control and Nonproliferation in Washington D.C., the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Monterey, and the Norwegian Nobel Peace Institute in Oslo. He serves on the Advisory Board of the UK Project on Nuclear Issues at RUSI, and from February 2026 directs the Leverhulme Centre for Humanity and Space at Leicester.

His books include Hacking the Bomb (Georgetown University Press), The Politics of Nuclear Weapons (two editions), and The Global Third Nuclear Age (Routledge, 2024).
