Colonel Nalin Herath RSP (Retired)

Colonel Nalin Herath (R) is a strategic affairs analyst, author, educator, and management professional with extensive experience spanning human resource management, international relations, security studies, and organizational leadership. He holds a Master’s degree in Management, PG Dip. in Strategic Defence Management, PG Dip. in Human Rights  and has built a multidisciplinary career at the intersection of policy, academia, and professional practice.

Nalin serves in advisory and fellowship capacities with several national and international institutions focused on security, diplomacy, and strategic studies. His research interests include geopolitics, maritime security, hybrid warfare, cognitive security, international humanitarian law, and the evolving dynamics of the Indo-Pacific region. He is a frequent contributor to policy discussions, conferences, and academic forums addressing contemporary global challenges. He served as Military Spokesman, at the Ministry of Defence Sri Lanka and Director General & Director Research at Institute of National Security Studies(INSS). 

In academia, Nalin has served as a Visiting Lecturer at many universities , mentoring students in leadership, management, and international affairs. He is also an author of books on geopolitics and international relations, reflecting his commitment to making complex global issues accessible to wider audiences.

Beyond research and teaching, Nalin has held leadership positions across professional and corporate sectors, bringing expertise in stakeholder engagement, strategic communications, organizational development, and people management. His work is characterized by a commitment to fostering informed dialogue, strengthening institutional resilience, and promoting greater understanding of emerging geopolitical and security challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.

At London Dialogue, Colonel Herath’s expertise strengthens the institute’s research across its South Asia Security, Maritime and Energy Security, and Advanced and Emerging Technologies programmes, bringing important Indian Ocean and Sri Lankan analytical depth to the institute’s coverage of the region.
